PIR is an improved material based on PUR. It contains more isocyanuric rings in its formula, which confer stronger thermal stability and flame-retardant properties. Due to its more complex formulation and higher process requirements, its cost can be significantly higher than PUR.
Generally speaking, PIR panels are suitable for more demanding applications, such as cold storage and industrial buildings. For most standard applications, a PUR panel is a good choice, balancing cost and long-term durability well.
- Preparation before installation: confirm the verticality and levelness of the wall surface.
- Install the waterproof layer on the wall first, then secure it with screws.
- Connect the polyurethane panels and fill the gaps with insulating material.
When using PUR sandwich panels in your project, the first thing you need to pay attention to is to install them according to the construction codes in your area. Pay attention to the maintenance of materials in daily use to avoid long-term exposure to sunlight and moisture.
CE and FM are the standards that a qualified PUR sandwich panel must meet, they can prove the quality and safety of the product.
PUR sandwich panels have a service life of more than 25 years when properly maintained (no exposure to sunlight or humidity), they are designed for long term use.
What are PU/PUR Sandwich Panels?
PUR sandwich panel is a kind of rigid polyurethane panel, which is wrapped by metal material and forms this sandwich structure. Its raw material — PUR —is the product of curing polyurethane foam. Isocyanates and polyols react chemically in the material to form foam, and along with the evaporation of the blowing agent, PUR will form a low density porous structure.
Because air has low thermal conductivity, PUR panels offer excellent thermal insulation. Therefore, it is widely used for thermal insulation in various applications, including commercial buildings, warehouses, and cold-chain transportation vehicles.
How was the PUR Sandwich Panel Be Processed?
Preparation Of Raw Materials

Before the PUR sandwich panels are produced, we need to prepare the raw materials, including PUR, the stainless steel or aluminum housing, and the required foaming agents and additives.
Unwinding And Preheating
First, we need to remove the metal panels and preheat them so our PUR material bonds well to them.
PUR Mixing and Foaming
The next step is to mix PUR raw materials so that the polyol and isocyanate react with the blowing agent and catalyst. Thus forming the foam core layer we need. Then its edges need to be corrected to ensure proper injection, and it will be injected into the metal plates.
Pressing
Once the PUR is injected into the metal plate, it will be pressurized to ensure uniform thickness and density for subsequent curing and molding.
Cutting
Finally, cut to the specified panel size and application requirements to produce the desired finished PUR sandwich panel.
Functions of Polyurethane Sandwich Panels
Thermal Insulation
Thermal insulation is the primary role of PUR sandwich panels. Because one of the characteristics of PUR is its low thermal conductivity. It can effectively reduce heat transfer between the building’s interior and exterior, helping maintain the indoor temperature. More importantly, it can reduce the building’s energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
Fire Protection
Another important purpose of using PUR sandwich panels in building is to meet fire protection requirements; you can also add flame-retardant materials to the raw materials or customize the products to different fire protection ratings, such as B1/B2. Whether used in daily life or in a fire, it can reduce safety hazards and prevent the spread of fire, ensuring people’s safety.
Load Bearing
When used as walls or roofs, PUR sandwich panels must also be load-bearing, and the high strength of the metal panels and their cores provides good rigidity and resistance to bending and flexing, helping them withstand the stresses of long-term use.
Moisture Resistance
PUR sandwich panels have a highly closed-cell structure and a PU edge-sealing process that prevents water vapor penetration. This feature prevents both external rainwater intrusion, which can reduce panel strength, and internal water vapor seepage, which can affect the low-temperature effect in cold storage or other low-temperature rooms.
Soundproofing

Soundproofing is also an important application for PUR sandwich panels. The porous structure of its inner core absorbs external noise. Therefore, it also plays an important role in hospitals, hotels, and other settings where a quiet environment is required.
Advantages of Using PUR Sandwich Panels
Excellent Thermal Insulation
Its lower thermal conductivity helps maintain indoor temperatures well, and on cold days, it keeps the room warm. It can also be used to maintain low temperatures in cold stores, preventing the deterioration of chilled food.
Lightweight
The low density of PUR makes PUR sandwich panels very lightweight, making them easy to transport and install, which is a key reason they are used on roofs.
Long Lasting
PUR sandwich panels maintain high strength and resistance to bending over the long term, making them a durable, low-maintenance material.
Can Be Easily Cut
Due to PUR’s ease of cutting, PUR sandwich panels are also easy to adjust in shape and size to meet different needs, making them highly flexible in use.
How to Choose Proper PUR Sandwich Panels?
Choose the Right Thickness According to the Applicable Scenario
The thickness of OUR sandwich panels can be selected based on the specific application.
For example, for general factories, commercial buildings, and warehouses, you can choose panels with a thickness of 50-75mm. In areas with more stringent temperature control, such as cold storage, thicker PUR sandwich panels are required for better insulation. Of course, for colder conditions in cold stores or cold-chain trucks, thicknesses of 100mm or even 250mm may be required to maintain very low internal temperatures and prevent freezing from being affected by outdoor conditions.
Consider the Fire Rating Required
Fire performance requirements vary by application. For public spaces, you’ll need to choose PUR sandwich panels with a higher fire rating and a B1/B2 flame-retardancy rating to comply with local fire codes.
Choosing a Reliable Supplier
Reliable suppliers are equally important in choosing PUR sandwich panels. You need to ensure that the supplier you choose has specialized factories, advanced technology, extensive production experience, and export qualifications. This means they can deliver reliable, high-quality products to your region consistently.
Of course, it is also important to have product certifications such as CE and FM. These are the most reliable guarantees to reduce purchase risk.
