Types of Cold Room Panels

PU Cold Room Panels
PU Cold Room Panels

PU cold storage panels are made with a high-thermal-resistance rigid polyurethane foam core, sandwiched between two layers of metal panels to form a stable, sturdy core structure. This structure provides excellent and long-lasting insulation performance and also enhances the overall strength and durability of the panels.

PU cold storage panels are suitable for a wide range of refrigeration and freezing temperatures and are widely used in food storage, cold chain logistics, pharmaceutical cold storage, and other applications.

PIR Cold Room Panels
PIR Cold Room Panels

PIR cold storage panels use high-performance PIR foam as the core material. They are generally regarded as a higher-level solution compared to traditional PU cold storage panels. Because under the same thickness conditions, PIR has higher thermal resistance and better temperature stability.

PIR Cold Room Panels are better suited to cold storage projects with higher requirements for energy efficiency, fire resistance, or long-term operation. They are often selected for large refrigerated warehouses, industrial cold-chain storage, and high-standard food-processing facilities.

EPS Cold Room Panels
EPS Cold Room Panels

EPS cold room panels are lightweight, easy to install, and have a high cost-performance ratio.

Therefore, assuming the insulation performance meets the basic requirements for refrigeration, EPS cold storage panels are typically used in scenarios with relatively lower temperature control accuracy requirements.

If your project prioritizes initial cost control or medium-temperature refrigeration applications, EPS Cold room panels are an economical and practical solution.

Fiberglass Cold Room Panels

Delivery time primarily depends on order quantity, board specifications, and level of customization. After confirming the technical parameters and order details, we will provide you with a clear, executable production cycle plan and work to ensure on-time delivery in line with your project schedule.

How Long Is The Service Life of The Cold Room Panels?

Under normal use and proper maintenance, the service life of the cold room panels is typically 15–20 years. They can meet the operational requirements for long-term cold chain projects.

Can The Cold Room Panels Be Cut On-Site?

Yes. We usually use an electric circular saw and a special alloy blade to cut cold room panels on-site.

After cutting is complete, it is recommended to use a specialized sealing adhesive to seal the cut surface and prevent moisture from entering the core material.

If the panels are stainless steel, the cut edges should be polished with sandpaper after cutting to remove burrs, prevent scratches, and reduce the risk of bacterial growth.

What Is A Cold Room Panel

A cold room panel is a prefabricated, insulated sandwich panel system designed for cold storage and freezer facilities. With its stable insulation properties, the cold room panel helps you maintain the set temperature inside the storage facility over the long term and reduce energy fluctuations caused by temperature changes.

In practice, cold room panels are primarily used to construct the walls, floors, and ceilings of cold storage buildings. They are suitable for commercial and industrial cold storage projects, particularly for applications requiring high installation efficiency and long-term operational stability.

Composition of Cold Room Panel

Composition of Cold Room Panel

Standard cold room panels usually adopt a sandwich structure. The outer layer consists of two corrosion-resistant, pre-coated galvanized steel plates (PPGI) as the outer skin. The middle section is filled with PIR (polyisocyanurate) or PU (polyurethane) foam core material via a high-pressure, one-time injection foaming process.

This sandwich structure ensures excellent insulation performance and structural strength, and also delivers you consistent panel performance over a long time running at the same time.

Surface Materials

According to different usage environments and project requirements, the cold room panels are made of various surface cladding materials, including:

Aluminum-plated zinc sheet (AZ150): It shows excellent corrosion resistance and is suitable for cold storage environments with high humidity or long-term operation.

Coated steel sheet (PE/PVDF): It balances protection performance and aesthetic appeal. This is suitable for cold storage of food and commercial cold storage projects that require cleanliness and aesthetics.

Aluminum: Lightweight and corrosion-resistant. It is suitable for applications where there are specific requirements for the structural weight of the cold storage panels.

Core Material

In practical selection, you should comprehensively choose core material such as temperature zones and operating environments. Common core materials are as follows.

PU (polyurethane) foam core material: It offers consistent performance and broad applicability. It is suitable for most refrigeration and freezing projects and is among the most mature cold-storage panel core materials currently in use.

PIR (polyisocyanurate) foam core material: It offers higher thermal resistance and better high-temperature performance, making it suitable for cold storage projects with higher energy-efficiency requirements and longer operating times.

EPS (expanded polystyrene) foam is lightweight and cost-effective. It is a better choice for refrigeration applications with relatively less stringent temperature-control requirements.

Latch Structure

Latch Structure

Interlocking tongue-and-groove latch: Common in cold storage panels, this latch structure combines with high-performance sealing rubber strips to form a stable, continuous seal.

This installation method is relatively simple and cost-effective. Therefore, it is usually adopted for refrigeration applications with relatively standard sealing requirements.

Double-sealed interlocking tongue-and-groove latch: A double-track independent sealing rubber strip is set inside the interlocking structure, and a sealing groove is reserved at the connection point of the latch. After installation, additional low-temperature-resistant sealing glue can be injected to form a “rubber strip + sealing groove” dual sealing system.

The leakage of the joint in this structure can be controlled below 0.05 m³/(m²·h). It is particularly suitable for low-temperature refrigeration and quick-freezing storage projects with stringent requirements for temperature stability and energy consumption control.

Hook Latch: Metal hooks are embedded on the side of the panel. During installation, the hooks interlock and lock into place, and the interior of the latch is equipped with high-density sealing rubber strips. The board and the board are closely adhered, with no obvious joint seams.

The hook structure displays high interlocking strength, good overall flatness, and no exposed screws. It is often used for large-span walls and roof panels, and is suitable for high aesthetic requirements. However, it also requires higher installation accuracy and construction experience.

How to Choose a Cold Room Panel

Temperature range

You should select core materials with different operating temperature ranges.

For example, when the operating temperature is between -18°C and 0°C, PU core materials are a common choice that typically meets the needs of the vast majority of applications.

Applicable Environment

The surface material directly affects the corrosion resistance and service life of the cold storage panel.

If the project involves the food or pharmaceutical industry, it is recommended that you select stainless steel panels that meet food-grade or GMP requirements, such as 304/316L.

Size and Thickness

Size and Thickness

The thicker the panel, the better the heat insulation performance, but the cost also increases accordingly.

For the roof and exterior walls of general food storage or constant-temperature cold storage, an 80 mm thickness is usually sufficient to meet requirements.

For cold storage at temperatures below -10°C to -20°C, it is recommended to select a thickness of 100–140 mm to reduce long-term energy consumption.

Fire Resistance Performance

In food processing, pharmaceutical cold chain, or large-scale cold storage warehouse projects, the fire rating of cold storage panels is an important indicator for project acceptance and compliance reviews. When selecting, please confirm the applicable standard requirements simultaneously.
