Polyols are further classified into polyether polyols and polyester polyols. The reaction between polyether polyols and isocyanates yields polyurethane (PUR), while the reaction between polyester polyols and isocyanates produces polyisocyanurate (PIR). Therefore, it has a higher aromatic content, which makes PIR more structurally stable under high-temperature conditions.

The chemical chain stability temperature of PIR foam is approximately 300°C, while that of PUR foam is about 200°C. This makes PIR more resistant to high temperatures under fire conditions.
